Hi, My girlfriend and I are moving to the OBX for the summer (May to Sep) and are looking for a place. We've pretty well exhausted craigslist and Ive contacted a bunch of realty companies directly with not much luck. I know people in Nags Head and KDH but we are trying to stay in Duck or Corolla and if not there then Kitty Hawk or KDH (working in Duck though so trying to avoid a commute)
Ideally, we'd like to find an apartment-type set up, the downstairs or upstairs of a home, an efficiency, loft, etc. A room in someone's home would be great as well but we are at least trying to avoid a house with 10 college kids living in it and we can't afford a huge beach house.
Any advice, ideas, where to look other than craigslist, or just tips in general would be greatly appreciated. I've never been to Duck or Corolla but have spent a couple summers in Nags Head so I know there aren't many/any apartments to speak of.
If anyone knows anyone or can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks so much!
I looked in Zillow.com and found one rental in Jarvisburg on the mainland. It is 3BR modular house for $950. There is no indication whether they would rent for only the summer. There must be many young people in your situation, and they find housing somewhere. Good Luck.
Google "OBX Long Term Rentals".That'll provide links to several management companies offering YR housing.Rentals are in strong demand and the availability is low.
It seems there were stories about people who built 16 bedroom/bath homes in Duck area a few years ago, with the intent of renting them out. Try asking realtors about that type of thing. If this story was true I could see someone exchanging some rent money for some maintenance work on your part. Just an idea.

Pretty much every young adult here who doesn't leave after high school rents out a large house with a bunch of friends; it's basically the only way to afford living year round on restaurant, construction, or retail wages.
