My wife and I want to check out the "Heights" neighborhoods in our car and then get on the rapid to head downtown. Where is the cheapest/safest place to park?

If you go to riderta.com and then go to riding options, then rapid transit stations, you will find several stations on the blue or green lines that have parking. You can be pretty assured that if the station is in Shaker Heights that your car will be fine. From there it would be about a 25 minute train ride into downtown. Hope that helps.

In Shaker the Green Line and Blue Line merge at Shaker Square heading west. The Green Line follows Shaker Blvd east to Green Road and the Blue Line follows Van Aken east to Warrensville Ctr.. All along both routes you can find some parking lots, some track-side parking, and on smaller stops you can park on the adjacent streets. None of these will charge you to park. At Shaker Square on-street parking is metered but behind the movie theater is a large lot (I am not sure if it is metered parking there).
The parking for the Red Line (thru University Circle) is difficult due to the concentration of the hosptals and schools. No free parking there.
Here is a link to a pdf file with a map: http://www.gcrta.org/pdf/maps/System_Map_Main.pdf
Feel free to ask any questions.
Good luck and enjoy.

There are a couple of big lots behind Shaker Square. All of the parking is free, but be wary of what the signs say because there are some spots that are reserved for specific stores. If you're willing to go a little further east (making your trip downtown about 10 minutes longer), there is a big rapid station/parking lot at the Green Line's Warrensville Center Road station. Parking there is free and it's very safe.
