Go to realtor.com and do a "map search." Click on "Presque Isle" (I think) as the area. That covers Aroostook County and some of northern Washington and Penobscot Counties. It is amazing what you can buy for housing up there for less than $50,000.00. There's one in Blaine, Maine for $22,000.00/3BR with a barn! Thing is, wife's family is originally from up there. A few are still there, but they ain't much goin' on. I suppose for retirement in reasonable proximity to healthcare and at least a little culture, with the ability to get out of town a few times a year, this might be real nice. The work outlook is poor, though. Still, where in the U.S. can you find housing at these prices?
Aroostook's real estate values do look very promising.
Any idea what the culture up there is like? Not to put too fine a point on it, but I don't mind being in a very rural, blue-collar, working class community. I love it, in fact! That's what I like. But I don't want to feel like I just walked into a colder version of Deliverance either, if you take my meaning.
FRom Caribou north is mainly French Canadian people. The County as it is called is very big. It is one of the biggest counties in the U.S. It is primarily agricultural. Potatoes are king! Presque Isle is the cultural hub With a mall,Walmart, and 2 colleges I could go on forever if you would like more info just email me
If I could convince my wife to buy a place in Aroostook . . . you've got to do basically what we did in the Bangor area years ago. Take advantage of what you have around you. Fish, hunt, cross country skiing, etc. I used to do an Allagash trip about every year. Making a living can be a creative undertaking. Jobs are few and far between, so inventing your own would probably be in order. Making any money at it, and keeping it, might be a little more difficult given the tax structure. And, actually, it's called "Thee County" from way back.
