Historically DC is Southern, but if you go by what most people in the 21st century consider to be the Northeast and the South, DC is without a doubt a Northeast city.

It's the state capital.
If there is no real way of knowing what region it's in than that's your answer, It's its own territory. Maryland, ehh it's a mid-atlantic state, Virginia is a southern state, DC is in the middle. Who knows

I Consider it part of the Northeast , aswell as Maryland. Of Course this is 21st Northeast US Definition. Its at the end of the Northeast Corridor line.
This is how i define the New Northeast.

^ That map speaks the truth. The way I see it, the traditional northeast - including Philadelphia, New York and Boston - has pretty much "accepted" D.C. and Baltimore into its fold because they've become such a big asset. However, this has made the south angry. :-)

I grew up in the DC area and have never heard of anyone refer to themselves as southern. People also tend to be culturally linked to the northeastern cities, taking road trips frequently north not south or they fly south to hit Miami. I think people need to distinguish what they are trying to say whether geographically or historically or culturally?

geographically - midatlanta/southern
historically - southern
(most important) culturally (todays time) - northeastern
