I like Richmond, VA, with its quaint historic sections as well as university areas. And I'm told there is very little traffic.
On the smaller side, Ann Arbor, MI is wonderful and as walkable and cozy as it gets. Roanoke, VA looks and feels like Ann Arbor to me, but with hospitals instead of the university.

I sincerely hope Detroit rises from its troubles and blooms again. Those pictures are really nice.Beautiful lakefront that could once again be stellar. Not sure what it would take to do that, but the pictures you posted both surprised me and impressed. I visit my family in Harrison twp often and have always just driven right past downtown.I will stop this time
Nice to see positive images of Detroit. My husband is from Mount Clemens, but we didn't ever go downtown, either. His late mother wouldn't let us. She made us drive around the city on 696 when we drove to her house from school in Kalamazoo.
San Francisco and Seattle are probably the prettiest large cities in terms of nature. New York and Chicago in terms of architecture. Dallas? LOL. LA? The Los Angeles area has a lot going for it, but it has one of the worst downtowns in my opinion.
San Luis Obispo, CA. I spend quite a bit of time down there, and it's one of the calmest, laid back and quirky downtowns I've been too. We've got mostly locally owned shops that range from beads to vintage clothing, plus some of the best restaurants around. Plus, we have the world famous bubblegum alley, Madonna Inn and weekly Farmers market
