This is actually an older post of mine from a different thread, but I thought I'd repost the data since it seems appropriate here.

Interesting Wisconsin History:

- The first hydroelectric plant, which uses rushing water to produce environmentally-friendly electricity, was built in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1882.

- The University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering’s Solar Energy Lab is the oldest of its kind in the world.

- Earth Day was founded by former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson to encourage people to learn about the environment and take action. Today, more than 200 million people in 140 countries recognize Earth Day!

- The City of Madison offered the first curbside recycling program in the nation, starting with newspaper collection in 1968.

Growing up close to the border of WI, and living in WI and MN for awhile....it is really shocking to live in other parts of the country (California even...or should I say especially since everyone labels it so "enviornmentally aware") where recycling and convservation are not expectations, and most people simply don't even think about it.

WI and MN are really leaders in conservation and enviormental awareness from everything I have seen
