Maybe other states, but this definitely does not apply to Jersey. It's pretty much split even between Philly and NYC/North Jersey teams. Even Rutgers doesn't have as strong a following throughout the whole state as some other state schools do in their respective states, probably because there are so many other good sports schools in the region.
Yeah...In Tennessee you have one NFL team (Titans), one NBA team (Grizzlies), and one NHL team (Predators)...all arrived in the last 15 years. You have no overlap, so no real instate rivalries on the pro level. Not everyone across the state has switched their allegiance to the local team...but I would guess that the dominant team in each part of the state is a team within the state (except for MLB).
I have more pride in my city (Cleveland) than I do in my state Ohio. Ohio's urban areas are too different from each other to claim pride in all (Cleveland=combination of East Coast and Midwest, shores and islands, valleys/Columbus=flat, Midwestern, massive sprawl/Cincinnati=Southern, hills, rivers). I mean I'm glad the state has such diversity in its urban areas but the differences cause such interstate rivalry that you need to identify solidly with one so distinction and culture can be made.
Although I certainly do have a lot of pride in what Sacramento has to offer, and consider it one of the most underrated cities in the country precisely because it is in the greatest state in the country, I have lived all over California, so I think of myself more as a pan-Californian over than simply being a Sacramentan.
Am I wrong? I know Cincinnati isn't "Southern" geographically or overall culturally but compared to the rest of Ohio especially NE Ohio there's a definite Southern influence there.
I don't know about that, thought you meant southern through and through.
I have more pride in my state of Louisiana than just Baton Rouge, my hometown. But out of the cities in Louisiana, Baton Rouge and New Orleans are my favorites, as I've spent most of my life there but each other city falls in place right behind them.

I agree, actually. That was my impression as well. However, Cincy was the southern-most city I've been to except Florida and Richmond, VA. It was more Southern-feeling that St. Louis, where I had previously lived.
Well I'm very proud of New York City. This is a great place with so much to offer and do, but I take more pride in being from Brooklyn than the state to be honest. I love Brooklyn and enjoy the friendly rivalry between the boroughs. I think us Brooklynites have the most pride of any of the boroughs :-)
I have state pride for California and Massachusetts that includes city pride for LA, SF, Boston, and Cambridge. But then, I have state pride for WA that excludes Seattle. These are the states I've spent the bulk of my life in...
