So these two towns have a lot in common culturally it would seem, but which do you like better and why?

Madison seems to have a much better economy, but it seems to lack some of the small town vibe and merits of Eugene.

Eugene is much closer to more untouched natural areas, but Madison is more of a node in politics, education, etc.

Which has a more innovative, experimental culture? Which ranks higher in respect for alternative lifestyles, personal liberties, etc?

Which is more affordable?

(Of course everyone will have their preference for weather, but that's as simple as midwest vs northwest climates.)

Does it come down to economic and political strength vs natural and small town vibes? Is cost a significant factor?

This seems like a really good topic--it's too bad that I've only passed through one and have never been to the other. I've heard a lot of glowing things about Madison though.

I am partial to the laid back and open, accepting vibe of Eugene. I have never been to Madison, so I can't really compare the two.

Madison is gorgeous and I love the vibe. Eugene is much the same way but I think Madison is a bit larger-at least it looks that way.

That said, Id pick Eugene cause I love the mountains nearby, the greenery and I've always liked Oregon.

Default how about winter skies?

I have heard that W. Oregon winters are gray and rainy. I have also read that Madison winters are gray and snowy. Can anyone comment on the two? Are they similar in that both are gray in the winter but different in that OR is warmer?

I've never lived in Eugene but I think winters there are pretty much the same as they are in Portland and Seattle. Likewise, Madison winters are probably like Milwaukee and Chicago IE awful.
