Not even close to accurate for the major cities

I agreee, was sort of expecting one of those “$190k a year is lower middle class in NYC kind of lists. But $112k or so is pretty reasonable

Define "comfortably".

Not even close. The notion that you can live comfortably on a 5 figure income in NYC or SF is patently ridiculous. Perhaps the writer has a very low bar for what constitutes "comfortable".

The article just says "live comfortably."

If people are mentally filling in the blanks with large household sizes, a flock of pets, the expectation of a detached house/yard then that's their issue.

Looking at the after tax breakdown laid out in the article, yes I'm pretty sure you can live in all those places with that money, and I"m pretty sure we can easily prove it with current RE listings.

Is the cost of living for Philly that low?

If it is then it is certainly the best bang for your buck.

Seattle - $77,634
Portland - $74,096

This doesn’t seem accurate to me. Seattle housing is much more expensive (median home price 830k vs 530k). Dining is much more expensive. Gas is more expensive. At this income level, you’re probably paying more state taxes in Oregon than in Washington, but not by that much. At least not enough to offset all the other expenses.

Not really.

The $42k/year figure for "Needs" they quoted for San Francisco is $3,500/month. That barely pays the rent on an apartment in a location where you won't be harassed by homeless druggies. And....food isn't a need? Utilities? Clothing?
