It's only REALLY hot for 3 months, it's fine the rest of the year.
Ive been there in mid-October and it was still 100 degrees, but not often. Most of the time it was 90-ish and kinda chilly at night. But from late May to October is quite smokin hot IMO. More like 4-5 months if you ask me.
I would take 110 in Phoenix over 85 and muggy here in the north east any day...bring it on! Hottest I ever had was about 115 while at Elephant Butte Lake in NM. Felt like my lungs were going to pop right out of my body.
One week last summer it was 90's all week and 80% humidity here in PA. Quite possibly the most miserable week of my life hot weather wise.
And plus you guys in AZ have a nice long pool season. Here it is July and Aug (if it is not raining every weekend) and that is IT!
This has been some interesting reading, I wandered into this thread while looking for some information on Devils Lake , North Dakota.
I live in Va,and like NC, it has both mountains and beaches, in about a 5-6 hour drive from each other. I can visit the mountains (Roanoke area) in about hours drive and in 4 hours am getting close to Va Beach.
But to name a state to avoid...not sure about that.

It's pretty easy to do: Just name a state that a) you've never been to but it looks yucky from the way it is portrayed by the media; b) you got stuck at an airport for days there once; c) someone you hate is from there; d) your preferences are one-dimensional: all you need is no snow or a professional sports team or a place where you can get rich quickly or a place with low taxes or (etc.) Just declare any state that doesn't meet your unidimensional preference as "to be avoided".

What states you wish to avoid all depends on the person. Each state is vastly different in many ways and everyone has their own opinion of what they do or do not like. What may seem like a dreamtown to one person may be a place to avoid at all costs to another.
Personally, I like to avoid extremes. I would not want to live in a steaming hot desert among the cacti, or in a frozen moose pasture. I also would not want to be very isolated, miles away from any sign of life, or in an area so congested you have no privacy. Areas where the cost of living is either way too low (few services or attractions either) or way too high (can't afford it) are also unattractive.
I don't like the cold and I don't like religion, so much of the country is out for me. But even states that I hate as a whole, such as Texas, have pockets that I would be happy living in (Austin for example).
There is no state that I dislike as a whole, but there are areas in some states I would avoid like the plauge! Southern Calif. is an area I hate along with inland North Carolina (east of Asheville and west of the outerbanks) as well as southeastern Florida. Other than these areas all the other US states are great!
I tried to avoid returning to Pennsylvania for most of my adult life, but it sucked me back in.
