Out of these three cities that are nationally known for good seafood selection, which one would you say has the best? Boston is known for Maine lobster and New England clam chowder, Seattle gets a lot of fresh catch from Alaska (salmon/halibut etc) and local dungeness crab & oysters, and New Orleans is known for gulf shrimp, crawdads, and seafood gumbo. Which city do you feel is the standout for seafood? What are some other seafood specialties in these cities that would standout as unique to the area?
I think Seattle has the best range and is the most innovative. First and foremost, you have very fresh seafood - amazing local oysters and crab (the inspiration for the Pac NW-original Crab Louie Salad) and fresh fish from Alaska - and one of the best seafood markets in the country, Pike Place.
You have not only a ton of the classic-style seafood (e.g. Elliot's, Salty's), surf & turf (e.g. The Brooklyn, Shuckers), oyster/raw-bar (e.g. Taylor Shellfish, Seastar) Fish & Chips (e.g. Ivar's, Spud's, Chippy's) and chowder (e.g. Duke's, Pike Place) restaurants, you also have a range of innovative and outstanding seafood places where chefs are constantly trying new things.
Places like Rock Creek, The Walrus & Carpenter, Westward, Tangletown Supreme - it's hard to find the kind of stuff they are doing in other parts of the country. You also have restaurants like Branzino and Staple & Fancy, where you can get a grilled whole fish filleted tableside, or places that specialize in specific ethnic styles of seafood (including Italian, Greek, Spanish). When you add to that the fact that many local grocery stores have excellent seafood selections, it's hard for me to vote for anywhere but Seattle.
I have to agree with others and vote Seattle. I've never been there, but it would appear that there is a much larger variety of seafood in Seattle...more than Boston and New Orleans.
New Orleans has an abundance of Shrimp, Blue Crab, Trout, Catfish, Crawfish, Black Drum, Red Snapper, and Oysters
All three are great, but man I've fallen in love with whole belly clams, lobster rolls and while I love all Oysters, the brininess of the East Coast ones hits my sweet spot the most. So I guess Boston, even though it feels terrible to vote against Seattle and NOLA.
Plus Neptune Oyster in the North End is arguably the best Seafood centric restaurant I've been to in the US and I've tried quite a few.
I don't know why Baltimore and Miami was left out of this. Both have some of the best seafood options.
Miami kind of sucks honestly. Baltimore I agree with.
