For all of you above commenting on Missouri, I would place St. Louis easily far above Kansas City for these reasons:
1) St. Louis is one of the oldest large cities in the Midwest, and was already 73 years old when Chicago was founded. Note that the St. Louis metro area has a population of almost 3 million people, which is larger than KC metro (2 million) and is similar in metro size to places like Denver, San Diego, or Portland.
2) St. Louis has a world class zoo, absolutely free, which is consistently considered one of the best zoos in the country.
3) The St. Louis Art Museum is free and has a beautiful collection that could take a day to look through. It is also worth visiting just for its architecture and the view from Art Hill.
4) Both of these are in America's largest city park, Forest Park. Taking a walk through the forest park trails past the mansions bordering the north side of Forest Park from WashU to the central west end neighborhood on the other side is a true pleasure, and one of the best experiences I've ever had in the midwest.
5) It has the Cardinals and the Blues
6) It has, in my opinion, one of the most european neighborhoods in the midwest (pedestrian friendly, dense residential, sidewalk seating restaurants, great walkability, great architecture, lots of young people), the Central West End, which is definitely worth a visit while you are in town.
7) It has WashU, one of the best universities in the country, and has great architecture based off of that of Oxford, and is worth a visit in itself.
8) It has Missouri's most famous piece of architecture, the Arch
I've never been to KCMO. However, I agree w/ your assessment of St. Louis.
Looking at that museum alone makes me want to visit the Lou !
