It may already be mentioned in the thread, but I find it fascinating that in Youngstown, OH on Interstate 80 East, New York City is listed as a Control City...400 Miles away!

On I-75 southbound, just south of Toledo, Ohio, there is a highway sign for Tampa, FL. Several miles south of there is another highway sign for Atlanta, GA.

I've never understood why Lake City is used as a control city in South Georgia/North Florida when Gainsville is the bigger and more important metro.

It's interesting that on I-10, going west from Phoenix, Los Angeles is the control city starting on the east side of the city of Phoenix.

Where from Los Angeles going east, San Bernardino is the first control city, then Redlands&Palm Springs, then Indio&"Other Desert Cities", then finally in Indio, Blythe&Phoenix are the dual control cities

Lake City is near the junction with I-10, so using it as a control city (and, more to the point, on the mileage signs) is a proxy for how far one has to go to intersect with I-10. From I-10 on down, the control city is Tampa. I think they should have used Gainesville, then Wildwood (because that's where Florida's Turnpike branches off), then Tampa.

The Lake City post is like Albert Lea in Minnesota. Who the heck knows what Albert Lea is outside of Minnesota? Why not Des Moines, Sioux Falls, or Rochester? Well, it’s the interchange of I-35 and I-90, two major interstates.

I was always amused by how broad and generic they were in the Chicago area highways. "Northwest Suburbs, Southwest Suburbs, Wisconsin, Indiana, etc."

I think that St Louis is eventually the control city on 55, Memphis on 57, and Milwaukee on 94

That sort of distance for a control city is highly unusual in the East, but normal in the West. Check out the control cities on this sign in downtown Salt Lake City:

Las Vegas (via I-15 south) is about 420 miles away.

Cheyenne (via I-80 east) is about 440 miles away.

Reno (via I-80 west) is about 520 miles away. Here's the sign you see, once you've gotten clear of the Salt Lake City environs:

After living in that area of the West, I was surprised by how minor the control cities used on I-90 in western Montana are.

What would you expect for heading east from Missoula? Billings? Fargo? Nope, it's Butte. (Though I suppose that makes sense given that it's at the intersection with I-15, as someone else brought up with the case of Albert Lea, MN.)

Heading west from Missoula, you'd assume they'd mark Seattle, right? Maybe Spokane? Nope, it's Coeur d'Alene, ID. Just in case you forgot you're in the middle of nowhere.
