This is a terrible comparison. The Westside of Los Angeles is one of the most desirable and fashionable business addresses in the entire world, is home to at least 20 billionaires, tens of thousands of millionaires, the biggest concentration of luminaries and famous people perhaps in the world, Im guessing at least 100,000 million dollar homes, countless cultural, recreational, entertainment and shopping amenities and so forth.

I dont see the reasoning behind anyone for one second believing that University City in Philadelphia(nice but several levels beneath the Westside of LA) is on par with the Westside. Sorry its not.

And FYI to the OP, 'Westwood' where UCLA(my alma mater) is just one neighborhood that is part of the Westside which is much larger:

The Westside includes West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Santa Monica, Brentwood as well along with several other areas

If I understand correctly, the OP is wanting to compare University City and just westwood. Though from the picture it looks like he's also including century city and the south westwood area (I would say something like: everything west of beverly hills, south of sunset, north of pico, and east of the 405).

I'm just comparing University City to only Westwood. It wouldn't be a fair match up to compare University City to the entire West Side of the LA area.

From what I hear, Westwood Village (the area right around UCLA) has been in a bit of a slump for the last few years - The area just opened a new "City Target" which are geared towards more urban residents (LA will have the most in the country with 3 by the end of the year), that may help swing momentum back to the area.

Only 53 percent of UCLA students/staff drive alone to work, which is a pretty good number for the LA area. The school has done a good job of promoting alternative transportation: UCLA traffic hits lowest level since 1990 / UCLA Newsroom

There is also the Wilshire Blvd "condo canyon": http://goo.gl/maps/UpWe, http://goo.gl/maps/Jly8

Overally, Westwood is not exactly my favorite LA neighborhood and one I have not spent much time in.

Don't like either all that much, but prefer University City. The thing I really like about Westwood is the Persian ice cream, the Hammer, and the Fowler, but is otherwise filled with too many college kids who are set on living out American college stereotypes.

So true, you should have seen it in the 80's it really has toned down tremendously. I didn't go to UCLA but I was young during that time and it was like spring break every Friday and Saturday night in the village.

Here are few photos I took back in 2005 from Westwood Village, there is a lot that I didn't capture but just thought I share what little I have.

The architecture of Westwood is very interesting. Westwood looks like a great "downtown" area and I would probably enjoy it much more than Downtown LA... however the parking garages in front of the houses have GOT TO GO.
