The one's that stick out to me most are Richmond, Omaha, and Charlotte. All miles ahead of similarly-sized metros

Hmm, why is it that all are MSA's except for the Bay Area? Shouldn't that be broken in two for consistency?

Northrop Grumman (aerospace/defense) moved from Los Angeles to DC last year.

LA's lost a lot of its aerospace stuff.

Birmingham, AL was also in that group as recently as the mid 2000s. In fact, back in the early 2000s both Omaha and Birmingham stuck out like sore thumbs with 6 Fortune 500 headquarters each ahead of many much larger metro areas. Several mergers, a relocation, and one big company's accounting scandal (HealthSouth) have not knocked Bham from 6 headquarters to 1 in only 10 years.
