On that list, I've only been to Franklin and Chattanooga, TN. Both are excellent downtown's IMO, but I would have guessed that in the entire country there would be many that were superior. I've been to Louisville but not the actual downtown, although I ended up in some other area I really, really liked. No idea what it was called, though.

This is possibly the worst list I have ever seen on this site.

There are some actual walkable, coherent, lively downtowns in North Carolina, but Winston-Salem (which does have a decent downtown) isn't the first that comes to mind. Asheville, Wilmington both beat it, and Durham and Raleigh might equal it.

According to this report from the Brookings Institute there are only 5 Fully Developed DTS in the US

Boston
Chicago
Downtown Manahattan
Midtown Manhattan
Philadelphia
(For the life of me I cant figure out why this report has SF in the next group called emerging)

But an interesting read none-the-less

And Greensboro's downtown overall isn't as urban (but it did get its downtown ballpark first and Center City Park is a cut above any of its Winston-Salem counterparts), but could be just as lively. I was blown away the first time I saw the activity on Elm Street on a weekend night--totally unexpected.

It's so unfortunate that the media ignorancy leaves San Jose out of the best downtown list. It has never been on best downtown lists anywhere while Detroit, LA and Fresno have been on some best downtown lists. Is San Jose that horrible? There's something wrong with this picture!
