Im a native New Mexican and ive never been to Toas it just dosent appeal to me. Santa Fe is cheesy, its the Disnryland of NM........fake. The whole culture thing is overdone like a Paula Deen accent.........its all for show, then factor in that half of the residents in Santa Fe are from CA or back East and what culture do you have left.

If you want to visit true real life NM culture, try visiting non tourist towns in NM.

I'd choose Flagstaff and Sedona. When you go the Flagstaff you have the mountainous scenery and when you go to Sedona you get the rocky scenery. Plus both Flagstaff and Sedona focus more on Native American culture rather than southwestern culture. Other than the snowbirds there aren't as much tourists as there are in Santa Fe because everyone thinks all of Arizona is a giant desert and don't realize that we actually have snow as well.

I am not sure of the percentage of alpine terrain for each state; however, 27% of Arizona is forest, while 21% of New Mexico is forest.
