I went to Penn State and live in Center City Philly now, for college I loved being at PSU, after I much prefer the city, the small college town does get old much much faster but was the time of my life in many ways
So I choose town for college itself

This does not help, but both are great for completely different reasons. I went to undergrad in a small city and it was a good mix of small town (which is campus centric) and big city (which has more students leaving campus for fun). I say equal and opposite, so I didn't vote.
I go to school in a mid-sized city, so i kind of have the best of both worlds (or not ). Its not a total college town, so the college atmosphere isn't as great as PSU, but Baton Rouge doesn't have all the big city amenities that i would like. I mostly prefer city life, but attending a university is the only reason i'd move to a college town.

Is that LSU - football must be pretty nuts there
There are also many cities that have many colleges, for example NYC, Atlanta, Boston, Philly, LA etc all have very high college populations; I think there is a differance though, both have their pluses and minuses. State College PA basically revolves around the university and there is nothing outside of it for basically a 100 miles.
The downtown of State College abuts the University and is overwhelmingly influenced by it whereas in university has two large Universities basically a few blocks from Center City and as many students yet the neighborhood is although highly influenced not quite the exact same feel.
I think a lot depends on what you desire, it sounds like baton Rouge may be somehting in between, I am sure they all offer a great environment but some will prefe one over another, and obviously the school factors in as well.
University of MD seemed a bit more of a hybrid to me being so close to DC but yet has quite a campus feel compared to if it were actually in the district itself.

I'm in the same boat as KidPhilly. I went to college in a rural area (Clemson, South Carolina) and now I live in Boston. I had a blast in Clemson, but I wouldn't have been able to live there after college because there was literally nothing around the campus haha...on the flip side I'm 80% sure I would have died if I went to college in a city.
Now that I'm a little older, a little wiser, and a little more mature the city is a better fit.
