I've tried to look this up, and all lists I've found are totally different from each other and have no real criteria/basis for their rankings.

Criteria include (but aren't limited to):

Nightlife
Age Demographics
Affordability for single living
Dining/Cafe's
Job Outlook
Entertainment
Average Marital Status
Outdoor recreation
Music scene

My top, in no order:

San Francisco, DC, Chicago, Seattle, New York

Any particular reason why? I'm least familiar with Seattle out of all the cities I listed, having only been there once (but I had a great time). It just seems to have a young educated population, good scenery/outdoor rec and a decent dining scene. And coffee of course...

Seattle definitely has a GREAT job scene if you are qualified. There's TONS of IT, engineering, and medical and research jobs here. The people of Seattle, though, are not big into extroverted sorts of social interaction. Most people when they date here find their girls or guys through social circles or clubs or activities. For example, the natural backdrop offers TONS of outdoors activities. Some coworkers of mine met their significant others while on a hike, or camping, etc.

There's also a lot of "dipping the pen in the company ink"... which sort of shocked me when I moved here because that was very taboo in the Midwest, and in the Midwest, typically you could go out any random place, strike up a conversation, and make a friend. Not here. By any stretch of the imagination.

In short, Seattle is "proper" or "focused" in how people meet, Chicago is more outward.

Affordability ... ehhh, Seattle is expensive. Not nearly as expensive as San Fran though. $2000 / mo gets you a studio there.

Have you thought of Pittsburgh? Long gone are the steel mills and toxic pollution of the river.

D.C., Denver, Austin due to all the criteria plus a good job market.

I've lived in Pittsburgh for the past 22 years. Its a great city and all but its not my type and its time for a change. Will be moving to Chicago soon (probably mid or late summer 2011). Good points on Seattle though, maybe I just had an above average experience.
