I feel like there are 3 types of cities: dangerous (the entire city is ghetto), safe (the entire city is upscale), and mixed (having both ghetto and upscale areas). I always thought of SF as one of the safe ones. But here are examples of cities that fit each category.

DANGEROUS - Detroit, Flint, Gary, St. Louis, Oakland, Camden, Baltimore, New Orleans

MIXED - LA, Chicago, NYC, Atlanta, Miami, Philly, DC, SF, Dallas, Houston (pretty much most U.S. cities)

SAFE - San Diego, San Jose, Seattle, Portland, SLC, Denver, Austin, El Paso
No No No No No No No! I went to school in Oakland, trust me people from Oakland are more scared of San Francisco than San Franciscans are scared of Oakland! There are parts of San Francisco that people from East Oakland are terrified of going into!

Things in the city have calmed down over the last year or so and even more so over the last 10 years. People typically hear about Hunters Point and The Western Addition (Fillmore and The Tenderloin) when they come to SF now but 10 years ago not only were those places worse but the highest crime rates came from the other side of the city (Lakeview, Sunnydale and The Geneva Towers). Then the City decided to Redevelop, Public Housing went down substancially in terms of availability so a lot of those people were driven out of San Francisco and the gang injunctions begun and since the city has changed a bit but to give you an idea of what San Francisco can be like:

In 2008 there were 99 homicides in San Francisco to Oakland's 124. Now, I know you're going to say San Francisco's got damn near double the residents that Oakland's got...realize that every person slain wasn't a native of the city they were slain in. Oakland's got about 10 square miles more of Land (Not water) than San Francisco....The bigger the mouse trap, the more mice you're going to catch, right. Do the math per square mile (rather than per capita) and Oakland had about 2.21 homicides per square mile. San Francisco had 2.11 homicides per square mile.

Oakland-Fremont, CA. was the 13th most dangerous Metropolitan Area in the United States in 2008. San Francisco, CA. was 25th.

Just some thought for the mind and incase you're wondering people do get killed in the Castro as well and they are for non hate crimes. If you research it you'll find atleast 3 homicides and 5 shootings in the castro over the last 3-5 years.

I'll leave you with some images of The side of San Francisco that people are ashamed of. I show it because this is were I grew up. Personally, being labeled and expected to fail made me strive harder. Enjoy...

I never said it was ghetto, I said it was bad and by bad I meant dangerous. Sure it has its safe areas but for the most part you're in a bad area.

Not really. Those "safe areas" make up most of the city.

I agree with you though about SF though... I'd feel much more pause at walking into Sunnydale than I would into ACORN (which I've done multiple times). The bad parts of SF are the worst areas in the bay area besides Richmond. The real hood in East Oakland is Seminary to 106th... the rest of East Oakland is a mix of good (Maxwell Park, Dimond, Laurel, etc.) livable (Highland Park, Clinton, Ivy Hill, etc.) and iffy (Fruitvale Station, Jefferson, etc). The only hood areas west of Seminary are Melrose and the Murder Dubbs (Rancho San Antonio). The bad areas in North Oakland (Bushrod and Gaskill) and West Oakland (Lower Bottoms, Campbell Village, Cypress Villlage, Ghost Town and McClymond) are small and out of the way... the rest of the city other than one or two neighborhoods in Downtown are some of the most beautiful and lively areas in the entire bay area. Keep in mind that Oakland CA is made up of 105 neighborhoods... any city that large is going to have a lot of variety.

yea but on the same date nyc as a whole had more murders this year then it did last year by 1 more murder. So the snow and unusual cold really didn't change a thing.
