Does anyone have a recommendation for a good CPA for individual tax prep? We have complicated taxes and desperately need someone! Yelp was not much help and we're new to the area; everyone we know seems to use one of the big companies. Since we owe taxes to 4 different states, I don't think it matters if they're in Cincy or NKY.

Thanks!

You may need to use a firm like H&R Block or a similar national company. Since you have four different state returns it is likely that very few if any local CPA's will be able to prepare any state returns other than KY, OH and maybe IN.

Really? We had the same problem last year (but fewer states) and had a CPA do it... hmm. I need to look into this. Thanks.

CPA's usually only specialize in state returns in their local area. I've yet to meet one that knows how to handle more than a couple of states. My thinking is that a company like H&R Block may be able to handle it since they use software for every state in addition to the federal return.

CPA's with substantial tax practices always are familiar with all nearby state taxes and since most states have similar patterns and all taxes are done with software that include all states, all you need is a CPA with a substantial tax practice.

I have many friends in practice from my days as a CPA (haha, you guys did not know that one, I bet) and I'll probably get in trouble for picking one over the other, but, what the heck. What are friends for.

Call James Paulin, CPA 513-662-7777

If you need someone downtown or East side, DM me.

PS: H&R Block is unqualified housewives with 30-60 hours of programmed learning training. you'd be better to do it yourself with Turbotax.

H&R Block has done my taxes the last two years and they've been superior to the addle brained gent that I was using previously for several years here in Kansas City. And they should be capable of handling most states tax forms.

When I lived in Connecticut I was unable to find a CPA to handle Missouri State Taxes. But that was a decade ago and perhaps things have changed.

The overwhelming majority of the HR Block people are neither CPAs or enrolled agents and cannot defend you in front of the IRS should you need that assistance.

Most of the HR Block people are more interested in selling things like RALs and their mediocre financial service products than in preparing quality returns.

Agree with Wilson513, a CPA is the way to go.

Yea, as for state taxes, its all in the software. Very few surprises there. There are still a lot of gray areas in taxation and H&R Block's mission is for the IRS never to charge you an additional dollar over what they say you owe. They guaranty it. Think about what that means.

And, totally agree with JL that the array of things they are selling tax customers is mind boggling.

Actually, H&R Block now offers a guarantee for a small additional fee where they will actually defend you in an IRS issue and will pay for any judgment against your return up to I think 5 grand.

They have not made any attempts to sell me anything and only completed my tax return. Conversely, the old doddering fart that prepared my taxes here in KC for several years was ALWAYS trying to sell me one of his additional products or services.

I think it comes down to this. Some CPA's are no better than the bad H&R Block offices you speak about. Clearly my experience with the H&R Block in my current area has been fine.

It is best if the OP can find a qualified tax preparer through word of mouth.

Actually, no. H&R block staff are not as qualified as CPA's who have all passed a rigorous multi-hour exam on federal income tax. Most of H&R Block's staff are non-professional seasonal workers who are determined to have to pay the maximum that could be argued so that they never have to pay your penalty.
