NEW YORK - In his visit this month to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI will find an American flock wrestling with what it means to be Roman Catholic.

The younger generation considers religion important, but doesn't equate faith with going to church. Many lay people want a greater say in how their parishes operate, yet today's seminarians hope to restore the traditional role and authority of priests.

i dont know how "diverse" it will be from Italy. i have family there and visit and notice that many more "modern" people dont attend church unless its a special occasion. i dont think it's much different than here.

Good article, but I believe that the Papacy is going to have to make a big change in the next 20-50 years. Not only is the church in the US changing, but Catholicism all over the world is changing. Fr. Peter Phan( Georgetown University ) gave a talk at my university about the change of the demographics in Catholicsm...Nearly 2/3 of all Catholics in 2050 will be from Asia, Africa,and Latin America...quite astonishing
