I don't know if this dude just doesn't know his way around town or if he's lying to you because he thinks it's funny to tell people to go stand in the middle of a crappy neighborhood every day. Anyway, that's not a nice area. That doesn't mean you're gonna get mugged every day; nonetheless you're entitled to know what it's actually like and assess your risk accordingly.

.... maybe every once in a while. But I sure wouldn't want to do it every day, esp. in the winter when it's already dark out by evening commute time.
