What side of Oakley is it on? If it's on the east side, then it falls within the IMD boundaries, which I wouldnt live in. They have the right to make you sell your home and can pull eminent domain. If you don't believe me, drive down 14th st. from Oakley to Ashland.

On Chicago Maps, Tri-Taylor includes all the way to Denvir on the west.

West of Western is fine until the train tracks just west of Maplewood, btw. I really hate the whole 'west of Western' thing. I live west of Western near Harrison and it doesn't get rough until you go under the viaducts west.

West of Western is okay north of grand, especially Chicago ave.

Western and Madison is pure ghetto. I don't understand the idiots who are buying townhomes and condos in that area.

South of grand and the viaduct I would not want to be much west of ashland in that area.

Further south it is better, especially south of the expressway. I looked at a building at california and harrison and took a pass as the area is still too dangerous for my taste. As you go east of there it dramatically improves before western but I would still want to be east of western, especially if I were living there and not using it an investment property.

Harrison and Cali is a little rough, but it's past the viaduct, west of Maplewood, which I mentioned as being the dividing line. Actually, though, I have friends on Cali and Taylor who are just fine there...to live, not just invest. Btw, they're white, early 30s and hava a baby. AND...I live west of Western near Harrison, and it's good...for living, not just investment, as well...and guess what? I am white, early 30s and have a baby, too.

Default Schools?

WestsideJ,

I am assuming you are planning to move by the time your kid is in school or have them attend private school. Public schools are a crappy option in that area unless you can get them into a magnet one.

I agree. The schools are garbage. Magnet and private are options, but we will likely move to the 'burbs at that point. Let me elaborate, though, I do not believe that children should be raised in the city, whether where we are or Lincoln Park. They need open space to run and play, not dodge cabs and drunk people on the street. I also don't believe in sheltering them, but I am totally going off topic now. We have a few years, but by that time, we will have lived there going on 10 years. Hardly an 'investment.' We like living there now. Super close to downtown and the blue line is 2 blocks away...and yes, we walk there. The little nook between Western and Maplewood, Harrison and Roosevelt is very family friendly, minus a few rental buildings. I, personally, think that this area is a great buy/investment for a young professional looking to be close to downtown and not pay through the nose for a place. We have a whole house with a yard and garage for less than a 1br condo would have cost us in any other, more 'desirable,' neighborhood.

Wow. Thats amazing.
You dont believe that kids should be raised in the city.
But you will live with a baby in a really sketchy hood.
Then move to the burbs.

In a neigborhood which I wouldnt dare live in.
I live in Rogers Park and am raising my son in the city
and I am because I was and its just normal for me.

I will however check the area out.
I guess this is a weird little pocket.

Same goes for anyone who is looking to buy anywhere in Humboldt Park west of Kedzie, including north of grand.

I would buy again in Humboldt Park west of kedzie north of grand again, just not raise a family.

I am currently haggling with a bank on a foreclosure just east of pulaski, north of grand. Nice dig though.
