south shore funnels into the Millennium Park station (end of the line, which is where you would get off). from there you can pretty easily walk to the pier (about 1 mile)

Yea, like 'via chicago' said, the South Shore line will take you to Millenium Park. Here are your walking directions to the pier... 1) Walk EAST on Randolph Street to Columbus Drive 2) Walk north on Columbus Drive until you get to Illinois Street 3) Walk EAST on Illinois Street which will lead you directly to Navy Pier. Print out some maps for reference.

Or - just walk East to the lake, and the lakefront path will take you to Illinois St.

^NO! This is not helpful advice. This is a confusing area with three street levels.

If you say "walk east on Randolph Street," most people would simply walk along the sidewalk in the open air. If you do that, you wind up on the upper upper level, 40 feet above Grant Park with no way down. Every year thousands of tourists get frustrated trying to walk from Millennium Park to Navy Pier. Options from hardest to easiest:

  • Walk east on Randolph to Field Boulevard. Look left and walk down the slope, through the park, then continue north under the viaduct and through the hole in the fence. When you reach the river, turn right and follow the path east to the Lakefront Trail, go north up and over the river, then to Navy Pier on your right. This is not as scary as it sounds, but in winter it may not be your idea of fun. On the map below, this route is shown as a dotted line.
  • Exit the Metra Millennium Station onto Michigan Avenue and walk north across the river. Just past the Hotel Inter-Continental, go down the stairs to the ground level and walk east on Grand Avenue to Navy Pier.
  • Take a taxi for $5.
Here: I drew you a map:

Take the train to Chicago. Walk north to Grand. Turn right on Grand and go all the way to Navy Pier. No steps to climb down, Or, at Illinois and Michigan, walk down the steps and go to Navy Pier that way.
