OKay, well I figured that since I'm gonna be moving there, then I should learn at least some of the real history behind Chicago. Recently, I've just been learning about the kind of boring stuff like bus routes lol

I've heard some things here and there about John Dillinger, ghosts/haunted buildings and places, Al Capone, gangs of today, Chicago's opera...

But where do I begin? Is there maybe a website that tells me about everything within THAT one website? It's just overwhelming to look stuff up when I'm not even sure if what I'm reading is true.

Try books. "City of Big Shoulders" by Robert Spinney is a concise and well written history of Chicago.

Here's some light reading, well worth buying for the pix and ease of browsing:

Encyclopedia of Chicago

Check out the Chicago History Museum (aka Historical Society) as well.

Here are two good books to start with:

Chicago: A Biography

Google: Encyclopedia of Chicago Its a great website. There is also a book as well. Good stuff.

For a less flattering view of Chicagos history read: Boss by famed columnist Mike Royko. Its all about the life and times of the first Mayor Daley (1901-1976).

Recently Dominic Pacyga, a local author raised in Back of the Yards back in the day, wrote Chicago: A biography. Also good.

On a clear day hundreds of years ago 2 Ojibwa Indians paddled up to a clearing next to the big lake. One Indian said to the other "Damn! This place smells like stinky onion!" And the rest is Chicago history!
