I am researching apartments and found some condos for rent in River North on or very close to the river. My understanding is most of Cabrini has been demolished so is that area safe for a woman? Is it next to impossible to hail a cab that far west? Lastly, I'm pretty sure the CTA map shows bus lines only (no subway that runs East from that area). Any other opinions? Thanks.

I used to work around there and have a female friend who moved there, I think it is safe. Most of Cabrini is gone and the area is HEAVILY policed. And I believe you are correct in that there are only bus lines around there.

I take it you are talking about south of Chicago Av? If so, yes, it is safe. The closer you get to Chicago the lowrises are right there (between Kingsbury and Hudson) and there are certainly still a good deal of unsavory characters about. That area however is much closer to the Chicago brown line stop.

There are quite a few buildings left north of Chicago ave, from Chicago all the way to just north of Division. The area west of Hudson and north of Chicago is still prime public housing territory.

If you stay S. of Chicago I would say it's safe. otherwise you are going into a "pioneering" neighborhood.

Don't hang out late at night around there alone.

The posters above correctly pointed out that there are housing project buildings that remain north of Chicago Ave.

There are no plans to tear them down anytime soon.

I am very concerned about your comment to not hang out late at night alone in the Kingsbury area. I have dogs to walk right before going to sleep so that could be as late as 11 or midnight on weekends. Is there more crime in this western River North area even South of Chicago Ave than say Lincoln Park?

If you are concerned about safety Id suggest move to the area east of halsted, north of randolph and south of addison. That area has people walking on the street at all hrs, and is generally considered safe.

Did you even read the thread? I don't want to break this to you but Kingsbury and Chicago is both east of Halsted and north of Randolph. It is also foolish of you to give such a broad boundary. Someone living on Halsted and Armitage will be quite a bit safer than someone living on Division and Halsted. And someone living outside your ideal boundary on say Fullerton and Ashland is also much afer then someone living near Cabrini.

OP- If you stay south of Chicago you will be fine. Avenger is just suggesting to be observant and not walk along Chicago Av or wait at a bus stop near the low rises late at night. The crime that occurs there is pretty much isolated to the low rises themselves. The neighborhood changes to a yuppie stronghold just south of Chicago and rarely do the residents from each side mingle.
