Guests are coming to visit Chicago this weekend from a warm place and are not used to our cold weather. What fun indoor activities would you recommend for them? They do want to try iceskating at Millenium Park (not indoor) and probably a museum or two. Any other ideas? They are a 40-something couple with no kids and are here for 3 days. Thanks!

Tell them to go across the street from Millenium Park to the Cultural Center. The building should be seen anyways, but it will also provide them with most events in town that weekend anyways, so your guests can decide what looks interesting.

Default Sadly that does seem to be Chicago's #1 way to stay out the weather...

I think Avengerfire is probably joking a bit, but Chicago is pretty deficient when it comes to dealing with less than ideal weather. While places like Colorado or Minnesota have a broad range of outdoor and semi-outdoor activities to keep things interesting in the colder months it is all but impossible to find all but the hardiest of souls doing anything that is not inside a fully climate controlled builiding. Heck we don't even have a fraction of the golf bubbles and soccer domes that town a tenth our size have in Wisconsin...

That said the major "inside activity" I would recommend beyond museums and restaurants is visiting our shopping areas. The old Marshall Field's on State St. has lost a lot of uniqueness as part of the clueless Macy's overlord's, but it is still a pretty special place, with glimpses into a era that are easy to fantasize about. The Merchandise Mart is also an amazing facility and even if the "shops" that are open to the public that hawk kitchen cabinets and high end baths are not your cup of tea the overall scale and breadth of the showrooms are pretty amazing.

If you are down town on a weekday it is worth spying on the real life kings of commodities and futures at the now post 9/11 vistor's centers of the CME group facilities: Visiting CME Group

Well in Minnesota and Wisconsin cold is a way of life. When the solstice happens and the temperature doesn't break 60 that day and has not yet for the year... what do you expect. Plus south west WI and and south east minnesota have something chicago does not-hills, and lots of them. I can't believe the colorado comparison, that's just not fair.

What is wrong with drinking,Netflix, pizza, and sex? It gets most people through the winter.

Of course, that is not going to solve the guest situation, but then again who knows?

Lincoln Park Zoo is always a good place. In the winter the walks between buildings are short enough that frostbite shouldn't be an issue.
