I'd suspect the Wicker Park and Bucktown yuppies shop at the WFM in Lincoln Park. that store is so massive that it could serve a wide area. I don't think Logan Sq is there yet in terms of getting an upscale supermarket like WFM. I think if there's going to be a new WFM in Chicago, it will either be further west (Lincoln Sq.?) or further south (Hyde Park??)

You are right that many of those from Wicker Park and Bucktown shop at the Near North location. Of course, many of them shop at the West Lakeview location as well. The thing is, with traffic, I think a Logan Square location would be quicker for many of these people. Traffic on North Ave can be a real nightmare east of Ashland. Ashland can be a real nightmare as well, especially when there is a Cubs game.

Can someone explain my generation's undying loyalty to Whole Foods??? You'd think the reports of union busting/benefit slashing (which I ALWAYS bring up in conversation) would strike a nerve with these bleeding hearts. But no, they just look at me and say "Hm, I never heard about that." I suspect it just makes them feel more comfortable to be helped by a faux-impoverished peer than by the obese middle-aged people at Jewel. You can buy organic food anywhere.

Certain people support Whole Foods because of the reports of union bashing.

Sometimes I think employers like Whole Foods and Starbucks strike a deal with their oddball help: if you bend over and work for peanuts we'll let you work with your crazy color hair, Shawnee Indian ear plugs and non threatening tatoos. Thus the employee gets to maintain his rebellious image without actually doing anything seriously rebellious, you know, like standing up to and making demands of your employer for instance.

bingo. they're also simply carpetbagging corporate cutthroats. I used to work at Foodworks on Diversey & Sheffield - Whole Foods clearly targeted that store when they opened on North and Sheffield.

This is why I won't go to CVS - no, it's not the same thing to have an out-of-state chain like CVS in your area compared to Walgreens, which has roots here.

what benefit bashing do you speak of? best job I ever had was working for a WFM and I had awesome benefits (dang, I miss them even now). lord knows the wages were several dollars more for a similar job at other chains

WFM isn't a godsend. it has its pluses and minuses, just like all stores. lord knows I don't shop there exclusively, but they're good for some stuff

How do you think many people in the rest of the country feel about Walgreens?

I don't like CVS myself. I avoid it at all costs, but occasionally go there if it is advantageous for me to do so.

I've always preferred CVS myself. no ridiculous coupon clipping, better sales, sometimes better service (ep. since many CVS have installed self check out kiosks), the majority of them seem to sell booze (though Walgreens is trying to catch up), and just better products, IMO. granted, I'm from MA where CVS dominated, so that could explain some of my feelings.

I have found many cashiers at the CVS locations in Chicago to be kinda slow. Yeah they are union at the former Osco locations. Not sure about the other locations.

Walgreens had beer and liquor until the mid 90's (and some until latter then that) and then let go of all or most of their licenses. The city kinda double crossed them. A few years latter CVS came in. If Walgreens still had liquor when CVS bought out many of the Osco locations CVS would have been toast. Now Walgreens is trying to come back with liquor.
