I'm sure numerically there may be a large number of Italians in Chicago but, being in Chicago, I never get the impression there are a lot of Italians here. They've been watered-down here...certainly not like back east where you run into Italians everywhere...Chicago is more dominated by eastern European communities...

The Little Italy neighborhood here is no big deal...don't get a real Italian feel other than a few restaurants and an italian ice joint...Cleveland has the best Little Italy in the midwest.

I grew up on the West Side when there were three thriving Italian neighborhoods there (Taylor St., Grand Ave. and Chicago Ave) and lots of Italians sprinkled around the non Italian areas of the West Side. A majority of the kids killed in the Lady of Angels fire were Italian.

Long gone to burbs now I reckon, just like the old West Side Irish, Jews and Bohemians.

They are long gone. A waiter at Oggi told me that in the 80s that part of Grand was still mostly Italian, now maybe 10 percent.

I guess when you consider that major Italian immigration stopped at least 60 years ago if not more, it is not that surprising.

I agree Little Italy pretty much stinks. There are a few little fun places along Grand, but not much. Heart of Italy on 26 and Oakley is fun and probably the best 'little Italy' but you are talking about maybe six restaurants over two blocks.

I've heard Harlem Avenue still has some pretty good spots, where you can go into some restaurants and hear only Italian, but I have not spent much time there. I am going to try soon though.

It's a shame what the process of forced multiculturalism has done. But, like always, diversity is strength!
