Anyone familiar with Hyde Park? How is the area around 55th and S. Everett? Its maybe like 2 blocks away from Promontory Point and right behind the Museum of Science and Industry.

The area is fine, but parking will most likely be an issue though- 55th of course is a less "happening" street than of course 53rd

How is the crime in the area..? I am assuming that since this is relatively close to the water and not near Washington Park nor the Dan Ryan, this is probably a good area. However, as we all know - Crime happens all over Chi-town...

Be careful not to venure too far south though. Areas in Hyde Park are generally safe as long as you are north of Midway Plaissance and East of Cottage Grove Ave.

There are some great places in Hyde Park to check out, 57th St. Books, Medici, Rajun Cajun (a really cool Cajun-Indian fusion restaraunt). For a gym membership, I'd recommend the U of C facilities at Ratner Gym.

I have a brother in Hyde Park. I am always amazed by the police presence when I visit. Maybe it's just me but I see cops everywhere it seems. Plus you have a sitting presidents house in the hood to boot.

I agree it's fine. 55th east of lake park is as happenin as anything in hyde park. Some good restaurants on that stretch, an interesting small produce market, plus a hookah cafe and my favorite dive bar.

As happenin nah- it's a different type of crowd and more laid back. Of the major streets 47th (though not technically in HP) to 57th, 55th is most def. the better street to hang out on

55th and Everett is in East Hyde Park -- mostly students and downtown commuters living in condos. It is the nicest, cheapest area to live near the lake in Chicago and within walking distance of Promontory Point on the lake, a major hangout during the summer.

The area has great transportation to downtown and lots of folks riding bikes. There's really only two bars and no liquor store so if your tastes run in that direction you are in for a bit of a walk. Tennis courts are at 53th street.

Strangely enough, it is also within walking distance of Wooded Island's nature trails and golf driving range -- that's in Jackson Park behind the museum, a nice place to ride a bike or visit the Japanese garden. On a historical note, in 1983, both candidates for mayor lived in East Hyde Park.

Parking is limited around there -- its like Lincoln Park. Crime is low in East Hyde Park.

The Cove is an acquired taste.

Wow I am definitely excited! It sounds like I'll have a blast. Do you all know how the Japanese Garden is?
