I am going to check out the new wing on the art institute. I am looking for a resturant to eat lunch within a few block of the art institute. No chains! It seems like there are no good resturants in that area. Thanks for your help!

Well, there's a restaurant attached to the institute itself which isn't too bad foodwise, but prices might be a bit higher than ' a chain' .. if you're willing to walk a few blocks, there are non-fast food alternatives in Macys ( Walnut Room and a better than average 'food court' ) .. A little further there's Berghoff and Italian Village . The closest 'chains' I know of would be the Cheescake Factory and Lux Cafe, but they're about a mile north on Michigan near the Hancock ..
There are a few other bar/restaurants nearby that serve a decent lunch ..others can chime in ..
If you're looking for an Applebees/Ruby Tuesdays/Chilis , not gonna happen downtown ..sorry .

I do not want any chain restaurants. The food court at Macy's is good as far as food courts go, but I am looking for a sit down restaurant. I have never been to Italian Village. I thought Berghoff was closing. Did they switch owners? Thanks snoylekim for your response. I will look into the Italian Village.

Default Try these out

There are two great spots around art institute

The Gage - Irish bistro but on a different level that you might think also with great tap beers. Well respected food in the culinary scene

Mecat a la Planxa - upscale tapas in the blackstone hotel, also well respected

both these spots are not that expensive either and if your looking for a non run of the mill cookie cuter spot then these are the places to go around the institute.

Have fun, I went to the new wing last week and its great.

Part of the Berghoff is still functioning .. there was minor eyebrow-raising around the hoopla with their original 'closing' and subsequent reopening beyond catering .. Sorry I misinterpeted your 'No Chains' comment ..I took that as lamenting that there weren't any versus an admontion to not recommendi any .. The suggestions offered by others sound yummy, too ..I haven't been to any <yet> ...

I could be wrong, but while I heard that the restaurant at the Art Institute is really popular and somewhat expensive but with awesome views, I also heard that it is only open one day a week? I don't know if that is true but I thought I read in the Tribune that was the case.

Either way, I would suggest Italian Village. I can't say that I have been to too many places in the part of the city, but Italian Village is definitely a good place.

Another place I like there is the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant. It's not too far (1400 S. Michigan) but a great, unique look inside and the food is pretty good as well. Just wanted to throw in a new place to consider.

My favorite place near the Art Institute is Russian Tea Time. It's about a half block from the museum on Adams Street. As the name suggests, they serve Russian food and also have a fantastic vodka selection (if you're up for that at lunch).
Also great for a more casual lunch and very close by is Pastoral on Lake Street, between Michigan and Wabash. They have amazing sandwiches there and a small outside seating area. I would recommend just taking them to the park and having a picnic. It's not really a sitdown place.
