Of course the TV has a ballgame on at Jimmy's, but that does not make it a hip hang out for the OP -- in his mid twenties he is right in the target for the north side bars, if he wants a quirky place that really does have stacks of reference books at the bar he won't find that in Wrigleyville!

Years ago I commuted to campus from the burbs. There was a shuttle bus from Union Station. Don't know if that would help with your commute, but you might want to check that out.

Yes, Blue>2 requires walking a block and waiting outside; I would go to Jackson-Van Buren and pick up the 2 at Van Buren. The #2 is on Bus Tracker, though, so you can time it to reduce outside waits.

I like the Green Line because it boomerangs around downtown, taking me to the west side without a transfer. Plus, it's elevated with nice views, and never crowded. If I didn't bike, though, it would lose a lot of its appeal.

The hospital runs the train station shuttle, and I've never seen it publicized to the broader campus community. They really do their own thing over there.

*Where* on campus you're going makes a big difference, since the Metra Electric and #6 drop you off a good 10-minute walk from campus, and the #2 has its strange counterclockwise circuit.

Great, thanks for all the info. It sounds like there are options as oppose to horror stories. I should at least be able to figure things out in the summer.

Hmm, in case my upthread post didn't make it clear enough, I was commuting from Wicker Park/Bucktown (WP/B).

If you don't want to live in Hyde Park itself than try the south loop/Loop/new east side or somewhere along the bus routes that go to the University of Chicago. If you live in the downtown area you have the best of both worlds, easy access to the University of Chicago and the north side neighborhoods via public transportation.
