I know CG has been talked about here before, but I'm looking for some stories of things that have happened there...good or bad. I'm doing research on project housing and would like some help. I would especially like to hear from any Cops out there that have had run ins there. Is there truth to the fact that at times the Cops wouldn't go in there? Would also like to hear from any residents, current and former. Thanks.

There was a gangland episode on Cabrini Green and particularly one of the major gangs in the late 90s/early 2000s. I also vaguely remember two kids (maybe 10 years old) danging a 4 year old boy old of one the high rise windows and dropping him to his death. They were both convicted and one is out now and living in a rural area in the south of the state. The other is a career criminal that has been thoroughly institutionalized. Others on this forum may remember more details on this case. I think it happened around 93?

I also remember another story from 10 or 12 years ago where a higher up in a Cabrini gang accidentally sniped a 6-year old while being walked to school at 7:30 in the morning. That launched a big blockade on the part of CPD. From then on CPD had a nearly 24 hour surveillance of Cabrini until the buildings began to come down.

Good look on your research. There are a few CPD cop blogs around that you should be able to turn up without too much trouble.

The crimes committed against Girl X is the most tragic and disgusting of the stories I know about.

BELATED OUTRAGE FOR GIRL X - TIME

Girl X attacker sentenced

Girl X needs a new home

Here is a site that has aerial pics of all the buildings before many were demolished. The former sheer size, scale, and scoop of Cabrini-Green is mind blowing. Those buildings once contained an equivalent of an entire city ward of people living next to each other in a complete cesspool.

When it comes to Cabrini, most of the attention was on the white and red buildings. I never heard any stories happening in the row house parts. I'm sure those were fairly unsafe too.

Here's my Cabrini Green story:

I used to go shopping every week at the Dominicks across the street from Cabrini, and nothing happened at all. I did get some good Fresh Value Savings on a jar of spaghetti sauce though!

When I drive down Chicago past the remaining low-rises, it reminds me of the pictures of German cities circa 1935, when the term "ghetto" was coined for the areas where all the jewish families were forced to live, before the concentration camps started. It looks like the city just wants to keep tabs on them, not let the residents get anywhere off the radar.
