If you are looking for low-crime, low-stress, your best choices are South Loop (if you don't mind high rise living), West Loop (if you do), University Village (if you like a greener, more suburban vibe), or East Pilsen (if you are into funky-but-chic). All of these are low-crime, low-stress options near downtown, but biased enough towards the South so that you'll be in Hyde Park quickly. Taylor Street (aka "Little Italy") and Brdigeport (home of the White Sox) are also options.

If you opt for the North Side, being near LSD is preferable to being near the Kennedy, but both totally suck during rush hour, so its the difference between just plain bad and utterly horrible, commute-wise.

As far as the stuff around the United Center, the condos West of Ashland are mainly for investor-homeowners, and as a speculative investments they are fine, unless you are a fan of chalk horses. But for a renter, there is no need to go that far West.
