After realizing that family rentals in Hyde Park generally exceed the Section 8 maximum (thereby making it unlikely to be the cause of Hyde Park's imagined ruination), it occurred to me that the black woman was probably a bulls**t artist who sizes up her white Hyde Park clientele and feeds them any political BS they want to hear in order to get a better tip. I knew a salon owner who expressly forbade her employees to engage in anything other than neutral conversation with customers.

Ignorant? She actually sounds like one of the more candid and honest black women one could ever hope to meet. Your political correctness has blinded you to reality, my little friend.

Of course you don't want to hear/read it. But see if she keeps feeding you your political tripe if you don't tip her well.

I've since realized that the woman is probably smarter than I initially gave her credit for. She knows how to milk money from whites.

It seems that there are other programs in place other than "Section 8" that affect entire buidlings. I know all about the low-income Co-ops, but I'm pretty sure most of the buildings are rental. Is this HUD housing? Something else?

After having problems with an isolated low-income buidling in Wicker Park, I now avoid these like the plague when trying to find a place to live. I've seen how one problem building can drag down an entire block and make life difficult for other residents. Otherwise nice neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Ravenswood are speckled with buildings like this, and the agencies responsible for the buildings behave like they are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of residents.
so what you are saying that you dont want poorer people living in neighborhoods that are better off?

No. I'm saying I personally don't want to live next to a subsidized building where people don't have to earn paychecks to pay the rent. Those buildings have been nothing but trouble when I've lived by them in the past. In my opinion, any government rent subsidies should be temporary--and should have an expiration date. Permanent subsidized housing breeds crime and government dependency.

Eh, what fun is life if a barber can't engage in unsanitized banter with their clients.

Lighten up. This is one view in a hundred million. The only point of the post was supposed to be that people are complex and it's hard to lump them into simple groups. I think you missed the irony of this happening in ultra-PC Hyde Park. Very few white patrons there would be comfortable with such dialog. It was just a slice of daily life in Chicago. Not that big of a deal.
