I'm considering going to school in Chicago. Living in Detroit, I have some background knowledge about Chicago, and I know the city has a lot of 'ethnic neighborhoods', a lot of dangerous neighborhoods, and a lot of expensive neighborhoods. I don't care about people's preference for who they live next to, and am not willing to get into a discussion about it. I just want to know where a student-aged black person could rent in Chicago for a safe neighborhood and reasonable price. My ceiling is $1200/mo. Would prefer somewhere closer to the action.

Which school are you going to? I would recommend close to school. You should be able to do pretty well with that budget.

Conflicted about what I'm going to school for, but that's another thread entirely...btu a few ideas are of course UIC, Columbia, or the IIA.

1200 per month for a studio or 1br? you will not have a problem even in cool neighborhoods like Lakeview, Wicker Park, etc. I can think of several nice buildings with 1br's for 1000 to 1100. You will literally have your pick of apartments (and you can do it for less if you are willing to stick with a large studio rather than a full one bedroom place).

Check out the "read this first" thread at the beginning of the Chicago forum and you will find some good info on neighborhoods.

I don't really need a 1br as nice as it would be to have one, so I will be looking for studios to for practicality and saving money.

I'll check out the thread and it's good to know that the price is not out of my league.

You can get a decent studio in a decent area for $550-$800. It is not going to be the Taj Mahal but you will be able to save big bucks.

Look in the Chicago Reader and on Craigslist.

Also, once you have narrowed it down to a couple schools you might want to visit them and see if anyone has posted ads in the cafeterias.
