Eh. He should have said "Hispanic" instead of "Spanish," since most of them don't hail from Spain. They're either Mexican or Puerto Rican. But yeah.

I'd second the recommendation for Berwyn or Forest Park. Unless there's some reason you have to live within the City limits (like being a City employee) I think that these areas would be better suited and within your price range. As Bru points out, both these communities are pretty indistinguishable from similar City neighborhoods, and theres a bit more going on then in McKinley Park. I don't mean to imply that McKinley Park is bigoted or homophobic, because I don't think it is, but you'll certainly be an anomoly there, and your kids might have a harder time fitting in.

I know this post is a while back but since i live in McKinley Park, I want to give my take on it. The neighborhood has definitely changed over the years. The best place to live in McKinley Park is near the park itself. To me, I think the "triangle" area is the best. It is an area with Damen on the east, Archer on the north and the park on the south. In a way it is kind of "secluded" from the rest of McKinley Park. We have nice tree-lined streets and most of the people keeps up with their houses. it is also close to the L and bus. so it is very convenient for people to go to work. People here are definitely indifferent. As long as you don't bother them, they don't bother you. We have decent amount of patrols around here since McKinley is a big park. Also, most of the neighbors are very friendly and we have a wide range of people here. hispanics do make up a big portion of McKinley Park but this area is very diverse. I love going to the park in the morning (and you would want to) because it gets crowded in the late afternoon. If anyone has any questions relating to McKinley Park, Bridgeport, Brighton Park, and Armour Square (Chinatown), feel free to email me and I can give you more information.

I can't believe you'd tell someone to shut up when you're the one who is in the wrong.

How would you like it if people started referring to you, an American who speaks English as "English"????

I've had friends visiting the tropics tell me that's exactly what the natives call white folks, all of 'em - you look white, they say things like you "hey, English - you need a cab?"

and certainly hispanic or latino is better as a general term for accuracy (a few of my friends who are Mexican and Puerto Rican tend to be pretty conscious of not being lumped in with the other group), but given that there is a huge street gang called the Spanish Cobras, it doesn't seem like an off-the-wall comment or anything.

What, if lunkheads who aren't Spanish say there are Spanish then they are? So if I call myself Lugantom29 I'm Lithuanian?

Lugantom, I like the sound of that.
