Check Craigslist rent prices.

Houston has cheaper rents and more jobs.

Houston has cheaper rents for a reason. Who would want to live there?

-The downtown is about 50% parking lots!
-The summers are just as miserable as Chicago winters.
-The public transit sucks.
-95% of the city doesn't offer a walkable, urban experience.
-Much of the city feels like a large suburb.
-Texans! 'Nuff said.

Why is it that the Chicago forum has beefs with the Houston and LA forums? Is this orchestrated or what? Why can't we all just get along?

They are the two cities closest in size to Chicago, so they are natural rivals. One is a more cosmopolitain west coast mega-city that is all things Chicago is not, but that also lacks many things that Chicago has. L.A. is cooler, bigger, and more in line with the jet set. Los Angeles surpassed Chicago in population in the 1980s, stealing away our "Second City" status, even though metro L.A. surpassed Chicagoland in population earlier. People are mad about that. And L.A. has always been a target for New Yorkers, Chicagoans, Bostonians---basically anyone who lives in an older city with a dense urban core.

The other is a southern Sun-Belt sprawl zone that desperately wants to attain the "big city status", but lacks everything that makes city life worthwhile. Houston is big, but not much else. Everything cultural or urban that Houston has can be found elsewhere at a higher quality level. Even the regional Texas stuff is better in other Texas cities. Houston is doesn't have the good qualities of L.A. or Chicago, but has most of the bad. Even if Houston does eventually surpass Chicago in population, it will still suck.

Have you lived in Houston? It has awesome fast food selection and better shopping malls. But I admit, Chicago is more interesting - better hangouts and LSD Park.

You have a weird obsession with "fast food selection." Of all the criteria for comparing any city to another, that's one I would have never thought to consider. Now, restaurants in general, sure.... but I sure wouldn't choose a place because it has Jack In The Box locations but no Culver's or something like that.

Don't forget Chicago is an Alpha city and may have the Olympics in 2016. Oh and Chicago is more important in terms of economics and socioeconomics. Chicago also has one of the best skylines in the country and is a household name.

I think the shopping malls thing is weird as well. Shopping malls and fast food are not urban phenomena, and only go further to illustrate my point that Houston is not very urban.
