So I've been reading articles on the Journal about major university presidents signing a petition to change the legal drinking age from 21 to 18, citing existing law not only does not prevent underaged drinking, but also prevents counseling and help for underage drinking.

I did a little research. some other developed countries don't even have a legal drinking age requirement (though some have legal stipulations on the buyer's age requirement, but consuming alcohol is legal at any age). For instance, Finland and Denmark and Holland, among many others.

Is legal drinking age requirement all that necessary?

there's already a few lengthy threads regarding this in the P&OC forum:

https://www.city-data.com/forum/polit...d-18-21-a.html

this seems more like a national debate, not a Chicago debate

Colleges are tired of "dealing" with the issue. I know this first hand.

Administrators are tired of having to deal with the issue because 1/2 of their wards are not legal, the other are legal, and all it does is provide adminstrative/insurance headaches.

The colleges are trying to pass the buck, so they won't have to waste time baby-sitting the issue. They want the issue to be a non-issue before students get to their campuses.

It's really about passing the buck (problem) to others.

I agree that this has little to do with Chicago specifically. Feel free to take it up in P&C.
