From a quality of life/cost of living standpoint, Chicago beats the tar out of NYC and LA. Its basically what you would get if you combined them both to produce something superior.

Let me set things straight
Attrill, you are referring to me. The original question was "Is Chicago underrated"

I said it doesn't match up culturally to a few select cities. I also said Chicago created not just house, but its own form of blues, and jazz, BUT much of Chicago's contributions were claimed by other people and cities. If you were to play house today people around the world would never think "CHICAGO!" Whereas in punk music noone would think "NEW YORK!" or of the Dictators, people would think about the UK.

Just because bands like Blind Melon and Guns and Roses move to LA to make it big doesn't mean they aren't from there. Remember people, almost the entire southside with musical contribtions came from Mississippi and Louisiana, so if you were to take away the contributions of Chicagoans who only moved here for a bigger musical market and/or economics start by sratching off Howlin Wolf and virtually every single other jazz and blues muscian.

Decision: LA has way more music than Chicago.

1. Chicago has great architecture that I overlooked. I concede.
2. Chicago still does not have unique fashion. Remember all that skaterware your kids have comes from Los Angeles. The punk stuff comes from New York. And what comes from Chicago? Exactly.
3. Chicago is still becoming more and more gentrified and suburban.
4. Chicago is not as cosmopolitan as LA nor NYC. There isn't a chance of getting 20,000 Koreans packed into a stadium to cheer on their national team during the World Cup like Los Angeles had during the World Cup.

Thumbs up I love chicago

[FONT="Arial"Chicago is definitely, almost scandalously, UNDERATED!!!! L.A., is that a real city? NOT!! L.A. is one huge boring, overrated, depressing suburb, with gangs. L.A. will never really be #1 or #2. For Pete’s sake the land mass in that pathetic town could probably hold millions more and still never come close to the population density of Chicago.

I was born in Chicago, Englewood Hospital (long gone), now in NYC. Let me tell you, here in New York, Chicago gets way more respect as a real city than L.A.

Not only that, Chicago is the largest “AMERICAN” city in the U.S.!!! New York is truly more an international city, L.A. is (?) ---- Who knows, who cares. Chicago is a beautiful wonderful city with rich history and culture, the latter be misconstrued because it is in the Midwest. Chicago has a pulse and energy only surpassed by NYC.

Lets just tell it like it is…OK? There are only two contenders for Americas best and “REAL” city, Chicago and New York. I’ve lived in many many many other cities around the country and at the end of the day only Chi-Town & NYC do it for me!!!!

I LOVE CHICAGO !!!! [/font]

I proved you wrong when you said that a big majority of them were from Chicago or the Midwest(with the exception of a few of the band members from around three of the bands listed). I proved you wrong when you said most of them didn't grow up in CA. When I listed Fleetwood Mac I was referring to the lead band members. If that is the only one that you can comment on then I guess I proved my point. Just because you are filled with hate for California and or LA like 90% of everyone on the Chicago forum are doesn't mean you have to deny facts. A lot of people say Kanye is from Chicago when he was born in Atlanta and moved there when he was a kid. I listed the ones that moved to California at a young age as well so I guess those count too. Sorry dude.
Guns N' Roses:
Axl Rose-Indiana (and grew up in also)
Izzy Stradlin-Indiana (and grew up in also)
Steven Adler-Ohio (grew up in CA)
Duff McKagan-Washington (and grew up in also)
Slash-England (grew up in CA)

Want more kiddo?

I never said a big majority were born in the Midwest or grew up there. I just said there are many on your list that did. As well as many that were not born in CA or grew up there.

These are your words and you are very wrong:

Please don't insult my intelligence again, you know not everything in our culture today originated in the midwest. If you want to argue with me about this then I won't reply because I have already provided the facts and I really don't like having an argument about CA on a Chicago forum.

The question is, "Is Chicago Underrated?", and if we're that high on the tourism list it's hard to argue we're underrated!
Nope, people assume Las Vegas, Orlando, and LA are higher because of what they here but the truth is in the numbers. Chicago is second. How can anyone like LA anyway, I think its way to spread out, there skyline sucks, its polluted as hell, and way to many posers and fake people. Plus they only have one season all year, that's boring.

Visited by overseas travelers 2007
1. New York - 7.1 million
2. Los Angeles - 2.7 million
3. Miami - 2.3 million
4. San Francisco - 2.2 million
5. Orlando - 2.1 million
6. Las Vegas - 1.7 million
7. Honolulu - 1.6 million
8. Metro DC Area - 1.2 million
9. Chicago - 1.1 million
10. Boston - 1.0 million

How does someone go by calling LA posers?? Think of your daily life and I guarantee you that you will find something invented in LA. LA invented the skater culture and Mainland United States surf culture started here with the invention of the shortboard surfboard, boogie board, and skateboard. T-shirts were invented by the USC football team in the 30's. Guess, Juicy Couture, Von Dutch, and 7 for all Mankind were as well. The Internet was born here (well the technology behind it) as well as Myspace. The Cheeseburger, hot fudge sundae, and other vaious foods. Paramount Pics, Universal, Metro Goldwyn Mayor, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox?!?! SWAT team was invented in the LA area in the 1960's. The Space Shuttle, electric guitar, and the modern bathing suit are a few more random things. I am really not trying to be a troll, even though that is the response I am going to get. I am just trying to help you guys better understand LA for those of you who haven't been there and gain opinions based on media and motion pictures.

. . . "AND THAT'S WHAT I THINK ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT CHICAGO IS UNDERRATED!"

By the way, nice selective use of statistics, as if only overseas tourists are tourists.
