According to Google, by bus takes 47 minutes. Anyone know how I can take the "L" from Navy Pier to Retro on Roscoe? I'll need to know where the train station is located near navy pier and what route.

Also, coming into Chicago for anniversary with husband for the first time weekend of August 2 to August 5 taking the Metra in from Downers Grove. Want to experience Chicago on a limited budget. I'm getting a visitor pass to ride the busses and trains unlimited.

Anyone want to give me some ideas of what to do cheap...things you think I may need to see... (Not doing Sears Tower, museums or any of the tours...just walking about and riding the CTA) I'd like to see things that may be missed by tourists but the natives love.

I need to be told where to pick up the train what color to get on and where to go...I can google map the rest.

I am going to Retro on Roscoe festival (I haven't hear Headbangers Ball LOL!) stopping at Village Tap... any other suggestions, what about Kitch'n Dude?

What should I do around Navy Pier.... should I even check that out. From Grand Rapids, Michigan seeing the Great Lake isn't a big deal to me.

Thanks all!!

P.S.... LOVE ANTIQUING...ANYTHING ECCLECTIC (sp?)...UNUSUAL...AVID PEOPLE WATCHER!!

You walk to the red line stop at State and Grand. It's about a 7-10 minute walk, I'd guess. Then transfer to the Brown line at the Belmont stop and take that to Addison.

There are a number of antique shops on Belmont from Western to Ashland, which is just south of the Retro on Roscoe fest. Personally, I don't know if there's much of a draw to Navy Pier if you don't have kids. Especially since you guys are looking to do this on the cheap, everything on Navy Pier is priced for tourists.

There are several buses that go to Navy Pier and connect with the Red or Brown Line.

The Village Tap and Kitsch’n are not very cheap at all. I am not saying they are bad,in fact they are nice places, but they aint cheap. Maybe they are not what you consider a bit pricey; maybe you will consider them cheap.

If you told us your budget per day we could help you more and I can stop making assumptions.

As stated earlier in this thread and numerous times on this forum, Navy Pier is an over-priced tourist trap only worth visiting if you have kids to entertain or dont care how much money you spend. I am not sure were you are coming from about avoiding tourist things and the lake, but you want to go to Navy Pier & do things around it. Most of downtown aint cheap either.

The Art Institute is free after 5:00 on Thursday and Friday this summer, oh - you don't want museums...

You can take a water taxi on the Chicago River from Michigan Avenue (near the Wrigley Bldg) or from Monroe Street (near the Metra-Olgivy station) all the way down to Chinatown ($4 per person one way), where you can disembark and sightsee. In the loop the view from the river is really cool, but as you head south its really industrial and overgrown. Might be a little smelly in August but its a real Chicago experience.

You could get a round trip ticket or come back on the Red Line (CTA) Chicago Water Taxi

There are free concerts at Millenium Park downtown on many evenings - you can picnic on the lawn with your own food and beer/wine.

Also, you can check with the Chicago Cultural Center for free tickets for any performances that are going on there while you're visiting.

If you like movies you could see if something interetss you at the Music Box Theater (artsy), or go to a Brew & View at the Vic Theater (more fun, especially for cheesy movies - I think its $5 admission.) Both are on the north side.

There are also movies in the park on Tuesday nights. Check out Metromix | Your Restaurants, Nightlife & Events Guide for street festivals, etc that may be going on then. Again, let us know what your budget is.

Also, just making sure you realize that the metra and the el/buses are 2 totally different systems that require different fare cards, etc (since you mentioned an unlimited pass)

I was under the impression you could just walk around Navy Pier....? I don't mind walking around a carnival atmosphere and not buying anything, just checking things out... maybe I have the wrong impression of Navy Pier. My budget is $60 per day August 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th.

My Metra train and CTA are NOT included in my budget. They are seperate.

Thanks again to all helping!!

what is the Lincoln Park Zoo like?
