So, how safe is it for a single female to live in the winthrop kenmore area? I am looking to buy a condo right on Winthrop and Foster and am just not sure if I should proceed with the purchase.

Since I have to be going back and forth from the loop at past 10pm for at least three times a week, would it be a problem for me to take the sheridan busses and walk west 2 blocks from the McDonald's on Foster?

Also, will the Berwyn red line be safe enough for me to walk around at, especially at night?

I have heard of all the scary stories surrounding the winthrop kenmore corridor, so I am actually thinking of cancelling my purchase.

Thanks everyone, for all your advises

There are occasionally groups of young men hanging around on the streets in that area, but I don't see it all that often. My impression of the crime area is also that it's more open sale of drugs than robberies. But I don't live there, I just visit a friend regularly who lives on Kenmore closer to Bryn Mawr.

There are also a fair number of mentally unstable people in that area, thanks to some nearby institutions. But I see those folks mostly in the Bryn Mawr stretch of the area.

I'd be curious to hear what any women in the area have to say about how they feel in the area. You should also try to find some hard stats. Here's a place to start:

It's not as bad as it used to be. Just check out your individual block to see if there are any "problem buildings". Many people live around there without incident these days. Instead of being one continuous corridor of crap, it's more broken up into little pockets now.

I've lived on Winthrop for a year and haven't had any problems. I live a little north of Hollywood, though. Of course I don't do anything stupid like try to drunkenly walk home at 3 am alone...

If walking two blocks from the bus makes you uncomfortable, and you're coming from the Loop, I would think you could take the 146, which at Foster comes off Marine drive and drives west to Broadway, so you could get off AT Foster and Winthrop. (I don't know how late that bus runs, though.)

I don't really know much about Berwyn at night, because I'm up further north, so I can't help you there. Bryn Mawr is pretty decent.

The Berwyn stop has always struck me as one of the safest in Edgewater. Bryn Mawr still seems to have more thug traffic for some reason. Thorndale stinks because of Senn High School.

If I were to buy a place in Edgewater today, I think I'd stick close to the Bryn Mawr "L" stop. That little strip is really improving, and it's close enough to the Andersonville action.

heh, but I'm always experiencing weird beggars at the Berwyn stop. I don't know if it's because Jewel's right there or what, but there's generally no one by Bryn Mawr when I'm using it... just your regular disgruntled passengers/CTA customer assistant.
