My wife and I are moving to Chicago next week from North Carolina. She has an interview with Al Raby High School, which I think is just north of Garfield Park. Although we have visited Chicago many times, we have never been around this area. We have read mixed reviews about the Garfield Park area and really wanted to get some insiders info. I know there are a few threads already on Garfield Park, but I wasn't sure how relative they were in regards to Al Raby. Oh, we will be living in the Streeterville area, on N. St. Clair. Thanks in advance for your help!

Only been around 4 years. Never heard of heard of the school. Very small. Not the most "war torn" part of the City, but not a prize either. WORLDS away from Streeterville. Does your wife have experience teaching in a urban/minority school. Real challenges...

I think the school has only been around for 4 years or so, only 500-600 students. My wife is actually applying for a school counselor position. This will be her first school counseling job as she just graduated last month. She does have some urban experience. Her practicum (600 hrs.) was with a school where 90% of the students were on free or reduced lunch, and her internship site was about the same.

I interviewed at Al Raby a few months ago. It is in East Garfield Park. It's literally across the street from the Garfield Conservatory, so there's generally a lot of people bustling about. I've only been to the area during the day, which is when I recommend being in the area. Also, the school is incredibly close (about 1 min walk) to the Conservatory green line stop.

EDIT: And I completely forgot to mention that it's a pretty nice school for the neighborhood that it's in. Each classroom has a computer and some other amenities. And the students were...very energetic. :-)

Yeah, pretty much what others have said. If you have to work in EGP, that is the best location. If she will be getting out of work any days after dusk though I would definitely recommend driving those days. The conservatory is only open until 6 and after that the bustle of people stops and even the block and a half to the train stop may pose some danger.
