Btw, if you have to seclude yourselves to one portion of a city because the other 2/3s isn't that well off. Can you really call your city "great"? Be honest here...

I love Chicago, I really do, but it's absolutely BORING if your not living or around the heavily funded areas in the city.

I don't remember all those looted stores being responsible for police and black killings, but perhaps I missed the memo.

Anyway, good luck opening that mom & pop in Englewood, West Englewood, Roseland, Chatham, Austin, West Humboldt Park, West Garfield Park, or whatever paradise you find. I'm sure it'll be fine

For me, the city is great.

I appreciate the:

Diversity
Energy
Great food
Museums
Neighborhood Fests
Gorgeous Women

And even if it's all out of 1/3rd of the city, I would still call it "great"

I agree, but the 1/3 (including downtown) that you say is "good" has more to offer than the vast majority of American cities.

I dig Chicago year round, its a cool city but the summer definitely is the most alive and has the most activities going on. And the fact that it lays on Lake Michigan is very underrated! So many things to do on lake Michigan and the beaches in Chicago are VERY nice!

Well, I didn't go to Milwaukee. Chicago natives at the SD airport bar advised against it and I listened.

Walked 48 miles in four days without really leaving the greater downtown area. I'd say the best thing I did was the Chicago river architecture tour, it was spectacular.

Not gonna lie, the ledge at Wills Tower was bonkers. I was huffing and puffing and made a beeline to the elevator after. Also went to 875 Michigan observation deck but was mostly fogged in, so didn't do the Tilt.

The coolest things were the simplest ones-like riding the L where it passes residential buildings from like two feet away-I've never seen anything like it.

I"ve never seen so many Starbucks in one place.

My whole life I"ve never thought Chicago deep dish pizza was anything special. I can now say that if you haven't had it in Chicago, you haven't had it. You hear people say this a lot about NYC pizza, I think it's true for Chicago too.

I had Giordano's, don't know where they rate, but it was leaps and bounds beyond any "Chicago Pizza" I've had on the west coast.

While I've done it an uncountable number of times, there is one segment on the northbound Brown Line train as it leaves the Loop (north of Merchandise Mart) that curves around the corner of a building and as you approach, it appears that the train will actually clip the building!

I am a Giordano's guy. Rarely have the pizza these days, but I prefer it over the well-publicized Malnati's.

I was talking to some out of towners while having a cider at Right Bee on Saturday and they were asking about Chicago pizza. I suggested Pequod's because, although not a Chicago deep dish in the vein of Lou's or Giordano's, it is a unique pie and you're unlikely to find something like it in many other places. I hope they enjoyed it.
Between Lou's and Giordano's, I actually prefer Lou's but they're both pretty dang good. Art of Pizza also does a really good stuffed pizza as well (and you can get it by the slice at the south loop location)

RE: The Brown Line. When we first moved here in 2005, we looked at an apartment that was just a few feet from the Brown Line, which seemed pretty novel at the time. I imagine it might have gotten old after a while though.

I think the novelty would have worn off quickly if you had pulled the trigger on that one. My last condo in Andersonville was 4 blocks west and 2 blocks north of the Berwyn station. On quiet winter nights, I could hear the soft rumble of the train approaching the station, followed shortly by the "ding dong" warning of closing doors, then the soft rumble as it took off for the next station. It was sort of comforting.
