The country club will have fireworks as well on the 3rd. Grand Geneva will have them on the 2nd. So plenty of options to view fireworks from the lake on any of the days you happen to visit!

My brother and his family went to Grand Rapids a few years back and loved it. And he has very discriminating tastes.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you.
Wisconsin Dells may be a bit farther than 2 hours but may be worth the visit. Check out Baraboo & the Circus World Museum.

Due to atmosphere conditions may determine what way to go & what to do. Also don't know how long it may take you to getaway from Chicago & the suburbs.

I was there about a month ago and it was not what I would call relaxing. That said, I think they have a fancy spa hotel there- Sundara? If you are looking for that, I think the American Club in Kohler is supposed to be very nice.

I went to South Holland about 2 weeks ago and had a great time- would recommend that as a good option for relaxation. Lake Geneva and Galena area always good choices as well.

Based on what I read from the OP, they were looking for RELAXING for adults. It doesn't appear like they're looking for tons of wild fun like many have been posting here.

Lake Geneva over the 4th of July? No crowds there.

Wisconsin Dells? Even on regular weekends during the summer, it's usually congested. It IS fun, but I sure as hell wouldn't call it relaxing.

Milwaukee? Might as well stay in Chicago.

I would agree that Wisconsin Dells is NOT relaxing.

Milwaukee is a very cool town. I like it a lot and think it's very underrated.

But if your goal is to getaway from Chicago, does it make sense to go to a somewhat similar, albeit much smaller, version of it?

I'd say Galena is a good getaway.
