Me, I don't recommend any other city besides Chicago, I love Chicago. But like some other big cities, Chicago has problems of its own making, it's no fun seeing that happening.

And you can't tell me with a straight face you wouldn't do exactly the same thing after you've put in nearly two decades of service.

As for everyone else, they're certainly taking you up on "accept it or don't take the job" as evidenced by the accelerated attrition rate combined with the CPD's well-publicized recruiting woes, for a job once considered desirable enough that the vast majority of applicants never even got to take the entrance exam, much less make it into the academy.

So you know what they're doing instead? They're taking you up on your other entreaty and going to Orlando and elsewhere.

Are you starting to see the bigger picture yet, or do you have another glib "take it or leave it" quip for the beat cops to chew on while the city disintegrates around you?
It turns out nobody wants the job at ANY level. They used to get dozens of applicants whenever the Superintendent job came open. This time they got a grand total of six so they've have had to hire an outside headunting firm.

When competent LEOs don't want the job because it's too politically toxic and too personally & professionally risky, guess who's left to fill the vacancies?

I can't wait for the 2024 Democratic Party convention. That's gonna be a riot -- almost certainly literally.

Now that April data is complete,

2022 Murders through April 2022: 180
2023 Murders through April 2023: 168

January and April saw improvements this year.
February and March were pretty much the same year to year.

Of course murder is just one crime stat.

Chicago once again has the highest total murders so far at 170 as of May 1. Philly is at 134 (down 15% from last year). Houston doesn’t report their current numbers, but they were at 80 through March (down 27% from last year).

Philly has about 60% of Chicago's population so in general they're usually worse.

Cool spring so far, the warm months is when things will pop off.

Mostly the murders are inflicted on the drug\gang folks (appro 75% per CPD).

I agree with the other poster than things like theft etc. can be a big issue too.

A car theft can be crippling to a struggling family....something I think a lot of people don't think about if they're more affluent.
