I am a single female with two dogs who is looking to relocate to the chicago area within the next two months. I am in the legal field and all the interviews and jobs that I have seen have been downtown. Any suggestions on a decent area to look for apartments? Thanks for any input. I dont want an unbearable commute and would like some info on what cities anyone recommends.

thanks

If you are in the legal field, then your work will more than likely be in the Chicago loop.

Questions: How much do you want to spend? What are you looking for in a neighborhood?

Basically I am just looking for an easy commute. Im not sure on rent cost yet because I know the cost is higher than where I am now (detroit area), but the positions I have been interviewing for are in the 40000-60000 yr range. As far as the neighborhood goes, I like quiet. Not into too much socially. Its just me and my two dogs, so quiet and as easy commute as possible. Thanks for any answers...

River North, Streeterville, South Loop, and West Loop are the walk-to-work neighborhoods.

River North, South Loop, and Streeterville are high rise districts.

West Loop is loft/midrise, and is fairly quiet, so I would probably recommend that, at least for starters.

I would recommend Oak Park (a nearby suburb with an easy commute) or, if you want to be in the city, be a bit cheaper and have a dogpark- West Lakeview. You'll likely be able to take the brown line in. I also know that Drover lives in a neighborhood that is on the blue line and farther north that he has described as having less as an urban feel, being cheaper, but convenient to transportation. I don't remember which neighborhood it was, but that might be another nice option.

All of these would work too, and will have an easy commute, but will be significantly more expensive and more highrises (and more congested), so it really depends on what you are looking for. Also, I imagine it will be harder to find a highrise that takes 2 dogs.

This is very true. It is, from what I've seen in my apartment hunt, much easier to find places willing to let you have two dogs in the less dense neighborhoods without high rises. I might look at Bucktown, which has easy access via the blue line to the loop. It's a vibrant city neighborhood, but if you have a place on one of the side streets it is surprising serene and tree-lined.
