If you want progressive, scratch off the south. 1-1.5 hours from a coast is going to be expensive.

Maybe Chico, CA? Eugene, OR?

Yes, or the Washington side of the river - good point.

We just got here last summer and expected to be here a full 2-3 years, but Covid has sped up our time here a bit. We are narrowing down our options, or at least trying. We have lived in Florida and are from Texas, and would consider Florida again, but the Texas heat combined with lack of decent beaches/heavily industrial shoreline make it unappealing.

I'm just kind of looking for ideas right now and feeling like we're missing something obvious. We are location independent, fwiw.

Thanks.
Not every box, but this sounds like Seattle or Portland.

We left Chicago for Greenville, SC 16 years ago. We're further from the beach than you want to be, but close to just about any type of activity you would hope for. Many have left Florida's heat for our area.

I know of someone who lives in Vancouver and does all his shopping in Portland... no income tax and no sales tax.

No one interested in moving to New Chicago? When I lived in Phoenix, 1993-1996, it was estimated, at that time, there were 400,000 in Phoenix with roots in Chicago, and some even went to re-naming Phoenix, New Chicago!

But that's been some time ago!

OP here. Probably not mentioned because I mentioned wanting to be close to a coast.

However, Arizona IS a draw. We have a kid starting at University of Arizona in the fall.

I always think its a good idea to be as close to a major research hospital as you can afford.

They come in wonderfully useful if a problem comes up. You don't have to hop on a plane or drive a long way at the very time when you are upset.
