Deplorable human beings can live in any neighborhood. I doubt the 3 month old was walking down the street and got jacked by gang bangers... pretty sure its parents were the ones who beat it to death.

Home break ins happen in every part of the city (and *gasp* even the suburbs), typically during the day while it is assumed the occupants are at work.

Bridgeport is one of the safest neighborhoods in the whole south side.

Pretty much this. I perceived myself to be safer when I lived in Bridgeport versus Albany Park, where I live now.

Default Homicides in "golden" part of Bridgeport

On Saturday, a 30 year old man was shot and killed at 31st and Wallace. This was at 5:45 pm, in broad daylight [1].

That makes three homicides in the last 12 months in Bridgeport EAST of Halsted, that I have read about in the news [2, 3]. It seems like a more typical 12 month total is zero. A caveat, one of these was east of the rail viaduct but west of the Dan Ryan, which a minority of people call Armour Square (neighborhood).

Does this seem out of character to you; and does anyone worry that the facts are changing about Bridgeport?

Well there were 2 in 2011, 2 in 2010, 0 in 2009, 3 in 2008, and 4 in 2007.

Seems like things have been holding steady for awhile.

Ive been here for two years and never been threatened in any way other that by the little 13 year old punks that ride around being public nuisances. Sure you get some shady guys outside the strip mall on 31st & Halsted and sure you've got some heavy vandalism along Carpenter, but this is a great neighborhood and I don't think things are going downhill by any stretch of the imagination.

Not too bad in Bridgeport. But it was much safer back when Lugans, Irish and Poles ruled the neighborhood.

Exactly. And those numbers are not out of line with just about any of the neighborhoods that are thought of as "safe" in Chicago. Certainly 0 murders is preferable to 3, and they shouldn't be ignored, but it's within the realm of normal year-to-year fluctuation and do not make the difference between "safe" and "unsafe".

Thanks for the opinion and statistics, DaPerpKazoo. But I really wanted to address the rash of homicides east of Halsted specifically. I'll start a new thread and go into more detail.

The point is that 3 in a year is not a "rash," whether you're talking about the whole neighborhood or half the neighborhood. If you were talking about two or three blocks, maybe.
